Jens Birkemose (born 1943) counts among Denmark's most versatile and provocative artists. For more than 50 years he has challenged the Danish and international audience with remarkable installations and assemblages rich in poetry, sensual and popular cultural motifs. In his quest to transcend the boundaries of his art, Birkemose links graphic techniques, photography, painting, literature and the sculptural. His opulent works are characterized by a creative urge nurtured by a complex reflection on the subconscious. Birkemose's art operates in a field of tension between human instincts and moral aesthetic conventions. His impulsive and sometimes voyeuristic visual world unlocks repressed emotions and thoughts - both the artist's, but also the viewer's.
Jens Birkemose cultivates an abstract expressionist style. He has been in Paris since 1976. In 1990 he received the Eckersberg Medal and is represented in many museums including Statens Museum for Kunst, AR0S Aarhus Art Museum and KUNSTEN Museum of Modern Art Aalborg.
