A. R. Penck, (1939 – 2017) was a German painter, printmaker, sculptor, and jazz drummer.
Penck was born in Dresden, East Germany. In the 60s he began to create paintings of stick figures and a range of pictograms that he called Standarts. He never gained admission to the fine-arts academies in Dresden or East Berlin, but later, after emigrating to West Germany in 1980, Penck was recognized for his primitive images, which he rendered in paintings, prints, and sculpture.
Penck was acknowledged as a leader of the German Neo-Expressionist movement.
