Per Kirkeby (1938 - 2018), Danish painter, poet, film maker, graphic artist, sculptor and geologist. He created an exceptionally ambitious and complex work in the last four decades. Kirkeby, whose importance can not be praised highly enough, is considered to be the most influential artist in the current Scandinavian art world.

From 1962 to 1965 he visited Eks-skolen (The Eksperimental Artschool) in Copenhagen, an art school created in 1961 by Poul Gernes and Troels Andersen in protest against the traditionally-founded Academy of Fine Arts.

At Eks-skolen, Kirkeby was occupied with many artistic forms of expression - especially the etching. Internationally, Kirkeby is best known for abstract paintings in large-scale and scenic brick sculptures found in many Danish and German cities. Kirkeby was represented several times at the Venice Biennale and at the Documeta exhibitions in Kassel.
